The High Chair
We have avoided using a traditional highchair at home. Not necessarily on purpose but more that we just didn't have the need for one (although I did like not having to buy a huge hunk of hard-to-clean plastic). Anyway ... when she was just a wee little thing, Kya used a Bumbo seat with tray. When she was a wee bit bigger we used a Chicco clip-on travel chair that my mom found on Craigs List. Up until last week we got by with the clip-on chair just fine but Kya seemed to have outgrown the Chicco chair. Not in size or weight (not by far!) but in maturity. I think she wanted a bit more freedom and room to wiggle. She's a great eater and is quite tidy so I saw no reason to object. Also, I like to use a table cloth on the table, and a clip-on chair makes that quite difficult.
So, down to the basement I went.
I'm so excited to say that Kya is now using an antique wood high chair that I once used. My sister Caitlyn used it too. So did my dad. And so did his dad. This is now a four-generation high chair.
The chair seat and base had been separated in storage and shipping, but I easily fixed that with a bit of wood glue. I also attached four felt pads so the chair doesn't scratch our floor.
For safety, I sewed a seat belt for the chair. I made it with extra quilt binding pieces and a plastic buckle from Joann Fabrics.
It's a keeper.
When did Kya grow up?!

Day in the life of Kya at 17 months old
Just another Sunday, according to Kya:
What is a good morning routine without playing dress up?
(this is her most favorite dress up attire - my tankini top, taken from my dresser drawer)
Daddy took me for a bike ride. I got a great morning nap. It was a little bumpy but I didn't mind. For the first time since the flood, we got to ride around the whole 'loop' by the river homes.
We went for our first bike ride almost exactly one year ago. I remember it, do you? Fun Morning in the Country
Then some oogling over Connor Francis Hager - my new (and only) cousin!
He's brand new (born 9/13/11) and simply adorable. I can't wait to visit him in Boston next month. I hope that big city guy is ready for some sloppy kisses and super cuddly hugs.
After my afternoon nap (which I cut short for no reason at all), Mamma and I baked corn bread to have with dinner. Dadda made his famous chili.
I wanted to sneak one but mom said they were for dinner.
So I marked my choice with a little finger hole.
Then I showed off my best inner fashionista with my Burger King crown, saggy onesie, leg warmers and Bison Booties. I very sternly (and loudly) declared that today was a "no pants day." Thankfully, Great Grandma Katy knitted me these cuddly leg warmers.
Then I did my chores. Here I am vacuuming. Mamma says I have cute legs.
This is me showing off after dinner. They tell me to get down. But I just get right back up.
More oogling. We are already in love with baby Connor.
Well that's the end of my Sunday but here are a few more photos from the past week:
It's fall!
Kya loves car rides. She usually jabbers to herself which I really enjoy listening to - it sure makes the 8 mile drive into town go quickly.
It's no surprise, but Kya still adores her Baby Rosie. Between playing with Rosie, coloring, and playing with playdough, Kya can easily have an entire day of fun.
. .
Just for some reminiscing fun, check out my blog post from one year ago: Hager Family Twins Trip 2010

Landscape update
Hi! This is Kya writing. I'm going to give you a yard tour since my mom has been slacking at yard updates. Try to keep up, I move fast.
This is the front yard and my 'ish' [translation: fishing pole]. I cary my ish with me whenever I am exploring outside.
This is the north/east side yard. "Ohh!" the sprinkler is on!
It is so funny!
Oh! There is goes again.
This is a plant. It is very interesting. [daylily waiting to be transplanted]
Dad says this our lawn.
The grass is really looking pretty.
This is mommy. She says that next summer we'll have a slip-n-slide party on this hill.
Mom has been busy planting lots of plants in our yard. She says "no, no" when I try to pull of leaves and flowers. I help water the plants. Sometimes I pull a leaf off when mom isn't looking. Shhh. That is our secret.
Did I mention we have grass?
The grass on the left is country blend grass for the "wild" part of our yard. The grass on right is our lawn. Daddy is excited to get the lawn mower out.
More pretty flowers I am not allowed to torture.
My Dad built this fence in one day. I got to help too.
This is our rock garden in the front yard.
And there is my dad.
Well thanks for exploring the yard with me. Come visit again.
Wedding weekend in Minnesota
Our friends Jason Ulmer and Kara Fuhrman were getting married this weekend and we joined to celebrate - in Minnesota!
Mid-day Friday we departed for our road-trip weekend out of town. We stayed with friends on Friday night in Fargo and left Saturday morning for the Detroit Lakes area.
The wedding was at the Fair Hills Resort. In one word: awesome! We are already making plans for our next trip.
Technically, this is their off season but we didn't know if by the weather - 90°F and sunny.
We had the beach to ourselves. Can't complain.
Corey and Kya enjoyed a relaxing float.
Then Kya got the tube to herself. I think she fell asleep.
I brought Kya's sunscreen but I didn't bring any for Corey or I. It was so HOT and so BRIGHT that I forked overhalf a fortune $12 for resort-priced sunscreen. Small price to pay for our day of fun and no sunburns.
Kya dug with such intensity. /It was fun watching her work.
She likes lake country.
The resort beach. All non-motorized equipment is free for guests to use (floats, life jackets, beach toys, kayaks, canoes, water bikes, volleyball, swimming pool, shuffleboard, etc).
The groom and a groomsman peddled up on water bikes.
90°F mid-September in Minnesota? yes please!
This is Corey in case you can't tell.
We have a beach bum.
She is a pool bum too.
We clean up pretty good, eh?
Some pre-ceremony shuffleboard.
Just hanging out looking cute.
This perfectly explains our weekend of chasing after Kya as she explored her world. Run run run.
This resort is seriously awesome.
Oh and they had a bonfire too.
This was our cabin. Kya slept in 68A and Corey and I slept in 68 (adjoining rooms).
Kya's room at the resort. Simple but clean and comfortable. Our room had one queen bed and full kitchen. Both rooms had full bathrooms. And the best part? Excellent food and not a TV in sight. Heaven.

The traveling toddler was a road warrior! Not a peep the whole way there, or returning.
