More Fishing!
This morning we put on our fishing gear. Yes even Miss Kya.
Watch out, she has pinchers too!
Grandma ReNay and Kya got a nice morning nap in the bow of the boat.
While they were sleeping, Corey and I were catching Herring. I had four on my line at once!
The herring soon became halibut bait. Sorry little guys.
We decided to try long line fishing again. So Corey got to bait more hooks.
And we saw lots of puffins. Yay.
A whole family of the colorful little birds.
And a sea otter! Adorable.
We pulled in the crab pot today too. No luck. Not even a star fish. Bummer.
Kya kept us entertained all day! She was on her best behavior today. We had so much fun.
Corey had plenty of fishing practice.
We pulled in the long line and just when we thought we got skunked with only star fish ...
(ugh, lots of star fish)
... we caught a nice big halibut!
Random Kodiak fact: did you know the largest coast guard base in in Kodiak?
And the second-largest US fishing fleet is based here too.
We're pretty sure we'll be fishing like this tomorrow: gill-netting for salmon. I'm sure we'll have stories to tell ...
We had so much messy and stinky fun today!
When we arrived back and the dock and at the fish cleaning station, this guy was waiting.
He really wanted our scraps.
This is his friend. I learned that they sit like this when they are drying out. Looks pretty funny.
Which one is bigger: Kya or the halibut?
answer: the halibut
Can you believe this is actually a "small" halibut?
I cleaned the fish all by myself!
please excuse the guts.
. . .
By the way, it is 10 pm here and the sky is so bright, you'd think it was about 3 pm. This time of the year, they have just a few hours of darkness at night.
