Alaska Vacation 2011: part 4

We've been fishing, fishing, fishing. And having fun, fun, fun.

Monday, June 6: Fishing
On Monday, Corey and I and my dad, and my parent's friend Ted went Halibut fishing. My mom stayed home with Kya. It was nice for Grandma ReNay to have some alone time with Kya and it was also nice for Corey and I to get a little break.

Corey jumped right into fishing duties and was put to work baiting our long line hooks.

Long line fishing works like this: long "line" (rope) is placed on the ocean floor with 30 baited hooks. Two rocks are attached to the rope, anchoring it to the ocean bottom. A long tail of rope is suspended to the surface of the water with a buoy. The line is set and left to "fish" for a couple hours. After a few hours, the line is pulled up, and each hook is detached from the line ... hopefully with a halibut on it.

In Alaska, long line fishing is only allowed in small communities, to residents who have lived in Alaska over one year. So we're pretty lucky to have my dad (who recently qualified) and his friend Ted to take us out long lining.

On this day, we laid two long lines with 30 hook each.

The hooks are BIG!

We use large chunks of herring as bait.

While out fishing we saw a few puffins. I think puffins are the coolest birds.

These fishing lures are called hoochies. Yes, we get a lot of laughs out of that name.

Grundens is the brand of the iconic orange fishing pants and jackets. Any rubber fishing pants will do, but orange is extra cool.

Corey, Ted and I pulling in the long line. We caught lots of star fish, a few junk fish, and five halibut!

These star fish are huge.

A favorite past-time of my parents and their friends is playing the game Settlers of Catan.

Kodiak has a local brewery. The make many varieties, but we got a kick out of the Sarah Pale Ale.

We found out it was a much better deal to buy it by the jug.

Tuesday, June 7
It was a rainy day in Kodiak so we visited the museums in town.

Kya met the bears at the wildlife museum.

Kodiak bears can be over 10 feet tall. yikes.

which one does not belong?

My dad decided to invest in his own long line. So ... we're learning to make knots. Lots of knots.
