Big announcement: Bison Girl has an Etsy store!

If you are not familiar with Etsy, it is a marketplace for homemade goods, materials, and vintage/antique items. In short, it is way cool.

So what is Bison Girl selling on Etsy?!

Bison Booties, but of course.

I made my first pair of baby booties when I was pregnant with our daughter. At the time I had no clue how much wear she'd get out of them. Luckily, I made two pairs ahead of time. From birth to today, she wears her booties during every outing and most days she wears them at home too. We have hard floors, so without her booties, her toes get chilled.

Fast forward to today ... I have modified the pattern to my liking. I have also up-sized it for babies 6 months old and beyond (because I could not imagine a world without these perfect little booties). I can't keep all these great booties for myself. I have to let the world in on this secret.

I call them Bison Booties

They are fully lined and have a covered elastic back, so they comfortably stay on active little feet. On the inside, baby's feet rest on cuddly faux sherpa, which does a great job keeping the toes toasty warm. As an added bonus, the booties are considered to be "soft shoes" - which are best for infant/toddler foot development and balance.

Currently I make two sizes (but I will expand this soon).

• 0-6 month booties measure 4 inches from toe to heel. This size has faux suede or fabric under the shoe since at this age the baby will not be walking.
• 6-12 month booties are 4.75 inches from toe to heel. This model is designed for maximum safety of unsteady feet, so the under side has vintage deer leather (or another similar super non-slip surface).

Since the booties are made individually by hand, the sizes my vary a bit. For the best sizing, measure the baby's foot and add 1/4 inch. When in doubt, order up.

The 0-6 month size would make a great new baby gift, especially for infants born in the fall/winter. And I have booties for boys and girls!

Big Girl Bath

Last week Kya had her first "big girl" bath in the bathtub. Before now, we had been using an infant tub, which worked great until she started splashing. So, we retired the infant tub to basement storage and Kya got to bathe in the big tub.

Kya and the geese got along great. She also really enjoyed these "magic" stick on foam letters and numbers. She claimed the blue 8 and held on to it for about 48 hours straight.

Kya has always loved her baths/water but this was a whole new level of fun.

She'd stay in there all day ... but I take her out when she starts to wrinkle.

Let it snow, let it snow ...

My views this morning:

Kya and I are at home for the day... staying inside where it is toasty warm.

Blizzard warning. Snow and 50 mph gusts equals a mess, especially on the roads. It is so windy that even the toilet water has waves.

To all in North Dakota: drive extra safe today.

Fine print: You absolutely must own the rights to the photo(s) you supply. This means that you personally took them or you have written permission from the professional photographer. Photo retouching (acne, red eye, color correction, special effects) can be added starting at $15 per photo. Prices apply to single-sided photo cards ordered before December 31, 2010.

Well our pheasant population is down by one.

Sunday spent at home

Here on the prairie of North Dakota, pheasant hunting season is in full swing. We spent yesterday in Linton, ND, and on the way down there, I think three of four cars were full of hunters.

Well today is Sunday and we are spending (most of) it at home.

Corey and his brother Andrew are hunting in the backyard.

From the sounds of it I will be cooking up some pheasant this week.

Kya and I are spending the day in the comfort and warmth of the house.

Kya got a package from her Great Grandma Katy yesterday. In it was this beautiful sweater and matching leg warmers. Grandma was worried the sweater would be too small already, but thankfully, it is plenty big (I even had to roll the sleeves). Thank you Grandma - it is beautiful!


Oh no. I seem to have misplaced my little sweetie. Can you help me find Kya?

(by the way, she had a serious case of the giggles when I took this - can you tell?!)

The 16 pounder

Little six and a half month old Kya weights 16 pounds and one ounce (40th percentile).

She is 25.5 inches long (30th percentile). And her head is 17.3 inches around (83rd percentile).

So in a nut shell, we have a very cute little lady with a huge head.

The check up went very well and she only cried for about five seconds when she got her shots.
