Day 8: DRIVE + HIKE Banff National Park
As luck would have it, when we booked our 'homebase' cabin in Golden, it was already reserved for a few days in the middle of our Canada stay. We moved out for two nights, relocating to Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park, from where we could explore the Banff area and Icefield Parkway. We'd then return to Golden for a few nights before returning to Montana.
In short, the world-famous Lake Louise and Morraine Lake were disappointing. We'd clearly been spoiled by the laid-back uncrowded vibe at Yoho.
Morraine Lake was magnificent and beautiful, yes.
But it was also incredibly crowded with parking lots rivaling that of Disney World. And the tour buses, oh those tour buses.
The shoreline around the Lake Louise has been "explored" to the point of it being as smooth and hard as pavement. It was sad to see the trampled shore compared to the untouched beauty of Lake O'Hara.
And here is Lake Louise!
So. Many. People.
So. Many. People.
For the first time ever, I was wishing we owned a toddler leash for Gavin so he didn't wander off into the crowd.
Park ranger chat at Lake Louise (haha check out Kya's expression!)

Exploring the Fairmont grounds at Lake Louise
Kya's totally awesome interpretive ballet dance at Lake Louise. (this is a video!)
Check it off the list. We saw Lake Louise.
Maybe my parents or Corey can help remind me of we saw Morraine Lake ... I seem to remember we opted to skip it based on the crowds at Lake Louise? And maybe a few cranky kids in our car?
Our bungalow cabin at Johnston Canyon was one of my all-time favorites, with just the right amount of modern and classic craftsman touches (real wood fireplace!). We stayed in the 4-person classic bungalow -- jiffy pop and the claw-foot soaking bathtub was just what I needed after days of hiking.
Corey and my dad went on an evening Johnston Canyon hike.
Tomorrow: Icefield Parkway!
